Definitely one of my favourite branches of mathematics. The limit of this tower yields a topological but not differentiable map, hence surgery works topologically but not differentiably in dimension 4. A simple example is the transition from Cartesian coordinates to polar coordinates in the plane. The proof is done using the exterior algebra. Flows on surfaces can be designed by specifying a few singularities and looking for the smoothest vector field everywhere else. The tangent space of a submanifold of Rn, identification of tangent vectors with derivations at a point, the abstract definition of tangent vectors, the tangent bundle; the derivative of a smooth map. Our patent office clerk couldn't quite figure this one out by himself, and had to ask at least one mathematician for help, but it turns out that space itself, the very medium in which we live in, is no longer so well described by the straight lines of Euclidean geometry that have served us so well in the short distances of our humble green planet.

Tight and taut submanifolds form an important class of manifolds with special curvature properties, one that has been studied intensively by differential geometers since the 1950's.

Is it possible to cross over all these bridges in a continuous route without crossing over the same bridge more than once? Imagine your vector field specifies a velocity at each point. The cohomology chapter is wonderfully quick and to the point. Five sequential pages providing a brief introduction to topology or "rubber sheet geometry". More technically, the idea is to start with a well-understood manifold M and perform surgery on it to produce a manifold M ′ having some desired property, in such a way that the effects on the homology, homotopy groups, or other interesting invariants of the manifold are known.
